| Nestled in Arkadelphia in the southwest part of the state along the Ouachita River, Ouachita Baptist University has as small student population of almost 1,500, but can boast two governor alums: Governor William Holloway of Oklahoma, and Governor Mike Huckabee of Arkansas (and Republican Presidential candidate). The school has an intense rivalry with fellow Arkadelphia school Henderson State, situated just across a small ravine from the campus. It claims to have the fifth oldest rivalry in college sports dating back to a first meeting in 1895. | ||

| Founded in 1877, Philander Smith College is the result of the first attempt west of the Mississippi River to make education available to freedmen (former African American slaves). The forerunner of the college was Walden Seminary, named in honor of Dr. J.M. Walden, one of the originators and the first corresponding secretary of the Freedmen's Aid Society. | ||

| Originally established in 1909 as the Third District Agricultural School, a high school, the school added 2 year college courses in 1925, renaming as the Agricultural and Mechanical College, Third District (Magnolia A&M). With the addition of third and fourth year college work, the school renamed again in 1951 as Southern State College, and finally as Southern Arkansas University in 1975 when the Masters of Education was added. The mulerider mascot is unique to the school. Tommy Tuberville, coach for Auburn and Ole Miss earned his undergraduate education here. | ||

| Originally the Arkansas State Normal School, to properly train students to become teachers in the state, it became the Arkansas State Teacher College in 1925. As time changed the school was renamed the State College of Arkansas in 1967 and finally became the University of Central Arkansas in 1975. Notable alumni include actor Gil Gerard and basketball pro Scottie Pippin. | ||
