Amicalola Falls, Dawsonville, GA |

Driving north on Georgia 400, as the highway ended, NOT found himself wandering around Dahlonega in search of Dawsonville and a waterfall.

As you get into the north of Georgia, you are in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. In fact, Georgia boasts one end (beginning? end?) of the Appalachian Trail.

Since the tail begins only a few miles away from the Amicalola Falls park, it is not surprising that one could find a waterfall in the area.
What is surprising is to find that at 729 feet, these are the tallest falls east of the Mississippi River.

NOT gulped and realized it was a looooooooooooong way up there.

You could hike up next to the falls all the way to the top. NOT and company decided to hike part way there but after a little while, they realized that it was still a looooong way to go up, and decided there had to be a better way to go.
Luckily, the nice people at the State of Georgia had cheated and gave a way to drive to the top.
And the drive was worth it. Not only did NOT get a view of the falls from the top, but also a lot of the surrounding countryside.

NOT was just glad he didn't have to fly up here.

But NOT now realized that it was a loooooooong way down. He was glad he didn't have to fly.

And while ducks love to swim and bob along on a river, he would take a pass at this one.
